Grab a car hire and tour the streets of this beautiful suburb, with tree lined streets boasting many fine mansions built in the 1800s. This gives the area a distinctive British feel, so much so that the residents of Cheltenham view themselves as being separate to nearby Beecroft, despite having the same postcode. The suburb was given its name by William Chorley. Chorley was a tailor in Sydney, and he built a house in the area, calling it Cheltenham, after Cheltenham in England (which adds to the area.s British character). Chorley obtained his land when it was released by the Field of Mars Reserve . a patch of land named such by Governor Arthur Phillip in 1792. The reserve is now home to an educational centre and was the victim of bushfires in 2002. It was Chorley that requested a train station in the suburb. Cheltenham is considered to be part of the Sydney area known as the Hills District, which is an unofficial term given to the area in the north-western area of Sydney. Both the upper north shore and the Hills District are chock full of affluent homes, and Castle Hill (part of the hills area) boasts the largest cinema complex in Sydney. Rouse Hill is also located in the Hills District near to Cheltenham, and dates back to the late 1700s after it was named for one Richard Rouse, a free settler who came to Australia in 1801. Sutherland Road used to run through the suburb, but with the opening of the new M2 motorway it is now peaceful as the road has been closed. Sutherland Road was named for the Minister for Public Works, John Sutherland, who served from 1887-1889.Grab a car hire and tour Cheltenham . just not the closed Sutherland Road.
