Cleveland suburb is situated some twenty five kilometres from Brisbane. It has a population of roughly fourteen thousand people in an area of approximately twelve square kilometres. Where the town derived its name from is contentious. While it is widely believed to have been named by captain James Cook in 1770, it is not clear whether he was doing it in honour of the Duke of Cleveland or John Cleveland, the secretary of the Admiralty during that period. Cleveland is served by roads as well as a railway line. Transport by car is easy given that there are various car hire companies in the area. In the 1840s Cleveland was considered a prospective capital and main port for Queensland. Unfortunately it never came to be. Instead Brisbane was settled on as the major port of Queensland. Ipswich on the other hand became the capital of Queensland. The first large structures were constructed in Cleveland in 1852 while the first post service in Cleveland began in 1861. The first school was started at just about the same time. There are a number of historical buildings in Cleveland which date back to the mid nineteenth century. These include the Cleveland Lighthouse, a wooden structure erected in 1864. It served the area for a hundred and ten years before it became technologically redundant. There.s also an old courthouse dating back to 1853 in Paxton Street built by Commissioner Francis Bigge. It first served as a house for timber cutters, then as a police station and a courthouse and today it is a restaurant. The Grandview Hotel in North Street was constructed by Commissioner Bigge too and was completed in 1849. All these historical treasures are easily accessible by various means including by car and this is made possible by several car hire companies in the area.
