This charming little harbour town, on the southwest coast of Cyprus, has an impressive history, well preserved centre and excellent tourist facilities. Paphos is apparently the birthplace and centre of worship of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, not surprisingly it is listed as a World Heritage site. From the modern town centre to the picturesque harbour and, stretching across the coastline, lie innumerable ancient sites. The tombs of the Kings is located underground and dating from the 4th century BC. The amazing mosaic floors of these 3rd century noblemen's villas, are the towns most important historical attractions and are considered among the finest in the Eastern Mediterranean. They mostly depict scenes from Greek mythology and are beautifully executed. There is also a 2nd century Odeon entirely built of well-hewn limestone blocks. Saranta Kolones is a Lusignian fortress destroyed by an earthquake in the 13th century. Paphos castle is a Byzantium fort beside the harbour, rebuilt several times since the 13th century. Its commendable museums include the Archaeological museum, Byzantium museum and Ethnographical museum. The tow also boasts several lovely Byzantium churches. If history bores you then there is plenty of action along the waterfront, with endless beach and sunshine. The resorts and entertainment has thankfully not encroached too much on the towns ancient character, though it does draw a crowd of package tourists in the summer.
