The Counts built a castle on the mountain (which was destroyed in the Seven Years War in 1769) but whose remains can still be visited by the tourist, or someone attending a public function. The last of the counts sold his countship to the Archbishop of Cologne in 1368. Towards the end of the same century a second castle was built on the opposite mountain, by Count Konrad. But the original castle is still the highlight of the city, for it was under its protection that the town developed. Two towers are still around today, the bell tower and the southern gate tower.
