Arnstadt is located in the state of Thuringia, in the district of Ilm-Kreis. It is situated on the Gera River, and is one of the oldest towns in Thuringia (it is the oldest documented town in Germany after Roman settlement areas, first mentioned in 704, although evidence suggests it was settled during the Neolithic period), and has the nickname ‘The Gate to the Thuringian Forest’. In 1703, Johannes Sebastian Bach spent four years in the city, and in 1707 married his cousin Barbara Bach just outside the city. In 1581 was built the Bach Church. Bach’s relatives have lived in and around Arnstadt for many many years, and about 20 of his family members are buried in the old cemetery. There is also a Bach monument in the market place, so for lovers of beautiful music you’ll have plenty to discover. Later in the 18th century, the castle that served as a residence for Princess Margaret Albertine was built and now houses a museum. Inside is a collection of the Princess’s puppets, dating back to the 1700s. ‘Our Lady’s Church’ is another popular attraction, going back to 1180, and also popular are the octagonal Ascension Church, and the former Church of the Franciscan Order, built around 1250.
